Suryakumar Yadav, who led India to the 2026 T20 World Cup title, is likely to be removed from the captaincy. Shreyas Iyer has emerged as the top contenders to succeed Surya, while Tilak Varma reportedly emerging as potential candidates for the vice-captain role. According to reports, Suryakumar Yadav could be stripped of the T20I captaincy.
The matter isn’t limited to just losing the captaincy, reports also stated that Surya’s continued presence in the team is also a big question. Team India’s next T20 series are against Ireland. News of Surya’s likely removal from captaincy surfaced before that with Shreyas Iyer emerging as the leading candidate to captain the side.
According to the Crichub, Suryakumar Yadav could be removed as India’s T20 captain. The Board of Control for Cricket in India, in consultation with the team management and selection committee, will appoint a new captain for the new season. This makes it clear that the Men in Blue will now have a new T20 captain.
The report quoted a BCCI official as saying, “The selection committee, BCCI and the team management, after consulting coach Gautam Gambhir, have decided that India should field a new captain from now on. The team won the T20 World Cup under Surya’s captaincy, but keeping his form and future in mind, the team felt it was time to move on.”

Poor form has become a big problem for Surya
Surya’s poor form proved a major problem for him. Although Team India won the T20 World Cup under his captaincy, he failed to score runs against the big teams in the tournament. Following this, Suryakumar mostly flopped in the 2026 IPL. He scored 270 runs in 13 innings at an average of 20.76, including two half-centuries.
Rohit Sharma announced his retirement from the format after winning the 2024 T20 World Cup. Surya was appointed the new T20 captain after Rohit. It will be interesting to see who will succeed Suryakumar Yadav. However, an official update from the BCCI is still awaited.
