An unbeaten century from opener Tazmin Brits powered South Africa women to a commanding 88-run victory over the Netherlands at the County Ground in Bristol. This kept their semi-final hopes alive in the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup. Currently with the same 6 points as India, South Africa will now hope to reach 8 points by beating Bangladesh in their last match, whereas India would need to beat a very strong Australian side to reach 8 points.
Century by Brits helps South Africa women put a daunting total
After being put into bat, South Africa women immediately exploited a friendly batting track. Captain Laura Wolvaardt and Brits set the tone early, dismantling the Dutch bowling attack to race to a blistering 66 runs in the Powerplay at 11 runs per over. The duo forged a dominant 121-run opening partnership, giving the innings a strong foundation. Wolvaardt was eventually dismissed for a well-made 45 off 36 balls, caught behind off Hannah Landheer in the 14th over. But, the breakthrough brought no relief for the Netherlands.
Brits went on a rampage. She registered the highest individual score of the tournament so far. Reaching her century off 63 balls, she finished on a spectacular 114* off just 69 deliveries, a masterclass including 15 boundaries and three sixes. She found an explosive partner in Annerie Dercksen, who smashed a fiery 37* off 16 balls. Together, they added 82 runs in the final six overs and took South Africa to a monumental 208/1. This was South Africa’s maiden 200-plus total in the Women’s T20 World Cup.
Netherlands women crumble after early resistance
Facing a mountain to climb, the Netherlands displayed impressive early resistance. Openers Phebe Molkenboer and Sanya Khurana attacked with intent, propelling the associate nation to 50/0 within the Powerplay. They put together a spirited 58-run opening stand before spinner Chloe Tryon got the breakthrough, dismissing Khurana for 36. Molkenboer fought on to top score with a gritty 41, and Sterre Kalis added a steady 26. Netherlands were in a respectable position at 100/1 by the 15th over.
However, the immense scoreboard pressure eventually took its toll. As the required run rate soared, South Africa’s spin attack choked the runs and triggered a spectacular batting collapse. Netherlands women completely lost their way in the final overs, capitulating from a respectable position of stability to lose seven wickets for just 20 runs across the final 33 balls.
Chloe Tryon was the architect of the middle-over squeeze, registering clinical figures of 2/16 in her four overs. Seamer Ayabonga Khaka then ruthlessly cleaned up the tail, snaring three wickets in the final over to finish with 3/19. Netherlands innings ended at 120/8, sealing a comprehensive, vital 88-run victory for South Africa that gave their net run rate a major boost.
Brief Scores: South Africa 208/1 in 20 overs (Tazmin Brits 114*, Laura Wolvaardt 45, Annerie Dercksen 37) beat Netherlands 120/8 in 20 overs (Phebe Molkenboer 41, Sanya Khurana 36; Chloe Tryon 2-16, Ayabonga Khaka 3-19) by 88 runs
