As the group stage of the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup is coming to a close, India and Australia will play a critical game, which can decide the final qualification spot for the semifinals from Group 1. The matches between these two, anyway, carry an extra intensity. This time, it can be a blockbuster due to the stakes attached to it.
Australia currently sit on eight points. Their superior net run rate makes their place at the top of Group 1 almost certain unless results take a dramatic turn. India and South Africa are both on six points, with India holding a much stronger net run rate. However, South Africa have the easier path to the knockouts, as they face Bangladesh in Sunday’s first match. Bangladesh could do India a major favour by beating South Africa. But if South Africa win, as appears the more likely outcome, India will need to beat Australia in their final game to keep their qualification hopes alive.
India have played four matches so far, winning three by comfortable margins. However, their loss to South Africa, inspired by a Marizanne Kapp special, has left them in a precarious position. They are still searching for their best XI, frequently changing both personnel and batting positions. A more settled batting order would help them post bigger totals or manage run chases more effectively. Spin remains India’s biggest strength, with Shree Charani, Deepti Sharma, Radha Yadav, and even part-timer Shafali Verma all in encouraging form. They will also hope their fast bowlers can keep Australia quiet in the Powerplay.
Australia, on the other hand, have looked flawless throughout the tournament. They won all four matches comfortably, with most of their players appearing in strong form. Their squad is packed with all-rounders, giving them batting depth down to No. 9 and typically eight bowling options to sustain pressure on opponents. Players such as Elysse Perry and Ashleigh Gardner are match-winners in their own right and, like Kapp, can trouble India with both bat and ball. Although Australia may experiment with their XI now that their semi-final spot is secure, they will be keen to maintain momentum and avoid giving India an easy win.
Recent Form (Latest first):
India: W, L, W, W, L
Australia: W, W, W, W, W
Conditions:
The pitch at Lord’s will be helpful for batting with a cloudy sky and temperature in the mid-twenties.
Players to watch out for:
Smriti Mandhana: After scoring two fifties in the first two matches, Mandhana has a slight slump as she scored in single digits in the last two matches. Although Shafali Verma looks to be in form, a big innings from Mandhana will be critical in such a high-pressure game.
Beth Mooney: Like Mandhana, Beth Mooney also scored three single-digit scores and an unbeaten 74 in this tournament. With her record of playing well against India, she can be a handful for the Indian spinners if she finds her form.
Injury update:
No new injury scare for both teams.
Predicted XIs:
India: Smriti Mandhana, Shafali Verma, Yastika Bhatia, Jemimah Rodrigues, Harmanpreet Kaur (C), Richa Ghosh, Deepti Sharma, Radha Yadav, Kranti Gaud, Shree Charani, Nandani Shama
Australia: Beth Mooney, Georgia Voll, Ellyse Perry, Ashleigh Gardner, Georgia Wareham, Annabel Sutherland, Nicola Carey, Sophie Molineux (C), Alana King, Kim Garth, Lucy Hamilton
