ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2026: SWOT analysis of Ireland Women

This marks Ireland’s fifth appearance at the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup, a spot they secured after a successful global qualification campaign. While they were eliminated in the group stage during their previous four tournaments—and face a tough group this time—their recent performances suggest they have the potential to spring a few surprises.

Strength

Their batting is their strong area as they have an aggressive core that is capable of delivering big scores regularly. Orla Prendergast is a top all-rounder who bats fearlessly at a high strike rate. There are also youngsters like Amy Hunter and experienced batters like Rebecca Stokell who provide the batting depth.

Weakness

Unlike the batting, they have lots of scope to improve their bowling. Especially during the death overs when the opposition can feast on their bowling, the bowlers can miss the control and bowl at lengths that can be targeted for big shots. Also, their spin options are limited except for Cara Murray.

Opportunity

Captain Gaby Lewis, one of the youngest players to make an international debut, is just 25 years old and leading a very young team. This can be an opportunity for them to showcase their talent and play an attractive brand of cricket. They are starting their campaign against a relatively weak Scotland team, and an early win will provide them with some much-needed momentum.

Threat

Their ability to handle high-quality spin remains a concern. With teams such as England, New Zealand, and the West Indies in the same group, each featuring some of the game’s top spinners, Ireland could face a difficult challenge. How well they cope with pressure in key moments may prove decisive.
Their recent Tri-series performance should give them a lot of confidence as they have beaten both Pakistan, thanks to a record chase, and the West Indies by the DLS method. They will aim to make an impression with some eye-catching performances in the T20 World Cup.
