Sri Lanka skipper Dhananjaya de Silva slammed a vital century to help Sri Lanka to 308 on Day 1 of the first Test against the West Indies in Antigua. De Silva, who slammed his 13th Test century, came into bat when his side were in a spot of bother at 42/3 and from there on stitched vital partnerships with Dinesh Chandimal (54) and Sonal Dinusha (43) and Milan Rathnayake (27) to ensure Sri Lanka crossed the 300-run mark.
Sri Lanka were 110/5 at one stage and the West Indies would have hoped to get the visitors dismissed for under 200. Fortunately for d Silva’s side, the tail wagged and ensured that they put up a respectable score on the board.
Justtin Greaves, who eventually got de Silva, was the pick of the bowlers with three wickets, while Shamar Joseph and Azarri Joseph chipped in with two wickets apiece.
However, it was ALzarri, who had made an early impact in the match, getting rid of opener Nishan Madushka and Kamindu off back-to-back deliveries in the 10th over. Later on, after lunch, Shamar did something similar when he sent back the dangerous duo of Chandimal and Kusal Mendis in the same over to put West Indies on top.
However, Sri Lanka fought back well and have now given themselves a chance in this Test. West Indies openers John Campbell and Brendon King had to negotiate just one over before stumps, bowled by Asitha Fernando, which they did successfully.
Brief scores:
Sri Lanka 308 (Dhananjaya de Silva 120, Dinesh Chandimal 54; Justin Greaves 3/39) lead West Indies 0/0 by 308 runs
