Women’s Asia Cup 2026: All-round Thailand edge out Hong Kong in closely fought opening match

Naruemol Chaiwai leads from the front for Thailand as they edge Hong Kong out in the Women’s Asia Cup 2026 in Dubai. The Thailand captain slammed 43 off 31 as her side posted 120/9 to give their bowlers something to bowl at. For Hong Kong, medium pacer Marina Lamplough bowled an incredible spell of 4/11, while Alison Siu chipped in with three wickets.

Chasing 121, Hong Kong never really got going and failed to stitch any significant partnership together. Kary Chan (28), Yasmin Daswani (28) and Lamplough (22) tried their best to get their team over the line, but in the end it was not good enough.

Hong Kong needed 15 off the final over and stayed in the hunt until two balls later, when Shahzeen Shahzad smashed a boundary to reduce the equation to 10 off 4. However, the batters managed to score three more runs in the remaining deliveries to hand Thailand a six-run victory.

Onnicha Kamchomphu picked up three wickets, while Phannita Maya chipped in with a couple.

Thailand, who made it to the semi-final in the previous edition, take on India next on August 30. Hong Kong, on the other hand, will look to stay in the hunt for a place in the next round when they take on India on September 3.
