Vaibhav Sooryavanshi has been in stellar form this season and has registered yet another record during the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 Qualifier 2 against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in Mullanpur. Just a couple of nights ago, he overtook Chris Gayle to register the most sixes in a season, and today (May 29) against the Gujarat Titans (GT), he became the first player to hit 500 runs in the powerplay in a single season.

The 15-year-old came all guns blazing and forged an excellent 73-run stand off just 37 deliveries with Ravidra Jadeja, who had to retire hurt.
Sooryavanshi is the leading run-getter in IPL 2026, having hit over 700 runs already, at an exceptional strike rate of 235. Today, he brought up his sixth 50-plus score this season, taking 31 balls to get there – his slowest in the IPL.
However, in the previous match against SRH, Sooryavanshi fell just three runs short of a well-deserved century. He was one strike away from breaking the record for the fastest IPL century.
Other records broken today
The teenager became the fastest to 1,000 IPL runs, getting to the landmark in just 440 balls. He beat Andre Russell’s record, who got there in 566 deliveries. In addition to this, Sooryavanshi is also the only batter to have scored 1,000 runs in the tournament, with a strike rate of over 200, beating Tim David’s 178.04.
The winner of the RR vs GT match will take on Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) in the IPL 2026 final on May 31 (Sunday) in Ahmedabad.
