After their triumph in the Women’s One Day World Cup in front of an excited and delirious audience, the Indian women’s team now is determined to add one more ICC trophy in the cabinet. Their journey in the 2020 T20 World Cup saw heartbreak, as they were beaten by the hosts, Australia, in a one-sided final. But now, they seem to be ever more prepared to cross the final hurdle.
India women ready for the precursor of the T20 World Cup
The Indian women’s cricket team is set to start a crucial five-match T20 International series against South Africa, marking their final phase of preparation ahead of the much-anticipated T20 World Cup. The idea is to fine-tune the strategies and combinations to ensure the team is well-equipped for the coveted tournament. The hosts, South Africa, were beaten by India in the ODI World Cup final, which adds more spice to the series. With both teams eager to gain momentum and test their strengths, the matches are expected to be highly competitive.
The squad: Mix of youth and experience
The Indian selectors have opted for a stable squad for this series, with minimal changes. They have omitted some notable names that toured Australia, but most of the seniors like Harmanpreet Kaur, Smriti Mandhana, Jemimah Rodrigues and Deepti Sharma select themselves. Mandhana is in great form since the Women’s Premier League and even had a solid Australia tour where she top-scored in India’s 2-1 T20I series win, including the match winning 82 in the decider. Rodrigues will also look to control the batting in the middle order with Harmanpreet and the wicketkeeper Richa Ghosh playing the finisher’s role for the team.
Among the youngsters, Richa Ghosh, Shafali Verma, Kranti Gaud, and Shreyanka Patil would play key roles. They also have two T20I debutants in the squad in Kashvee Gautam and Anushka Sharma. The seam bowling all-rounder Gautam has already played one Test and 6 ODIs for India and will look to make her debut as a seam bowling option together with Renuka Singh, Arundhati Reddy, and Gaud. Anushka made her name during the last WPL with her aggressive batting and high percentage of boundaries. India will hope to unleash another big hitter through her. The selectors have also recalled the wicketkeeper Uma Chetry as an understudy to Ghosh.
India Women Squad: Smriti Mandhana, Shafali Verma, Jemimah Rodrigues, Harmanpreet Kaur(c), Deepti Sharma, Richa Ghosh(w), Arundhati Reddy, Shree Charani, Kranti Gaud, Shreyanka Patil, Renuka Singh Thakur, Kashvee Gautam, Anushka Sharma, Uma Chetry, Bharti Fulmali
The Proteas: Hapless but not an easy hurdle to cross
For the hosts, their squad is also a good mix of youth and experience. Whereas Laura Wolvaardt, Anneke Bosch, Nadine de Klerk and Suné Luus bring the experience, they have youngsters like Tebogo Macheke, Eliz-Mari Marx and Kayla Reyneke in their ranks. Especially fans and former players are excited about the all-rounder Reyneke, who they consider to become the next big face of women’s cricket in the years to come.
The Proteas, however, will be without two of their senior players- Dan van Niekerk and Marizanne Kapp due to injuries. On the other hand, the hosts are coming off a devastating series loss against New Zealand. No wonder the visitors will be keen to take advantage of a hapless South Africa.
It would be a good series before the big one starts in June 2026 in the United Kingdom- an important precursor to the much-anticipated T20 World Cup. Both teams are keen to gain valuable experience and build a positive mindset. India and South Africa are part of the same group for the Women’s T20 World Cup 2026, which makes the series even more exciting.
For the Indian team, a series win on South African soil would be a remarkable achievement. Overcoming the hosts in their own backyard would not only add to the team’s confidence but also serve as a major morale booster as they prepare for the challenges that lie ahead.
