The Indian women’s cricket team has suffered a major setback ahead of the upcoming Asia Cup and the subsequent Asian Games, with the loss of star player Jemimah Rodrigues. Jemimah suffered a hamstring injury during ‘The Hundred’ tournament in England, ruling her out. The BCCI has now officially announced her exclusion from the upcoming Asia Cup and Asian Games due to this injury.
In a press release issued by the BCCI, they announced Jemimah’s replacement player, Pratika Rawal, as part of the Asia Cup squad. The Indian women’s team will play their first matches in the 2026 Asia Cup against Thailand on August 30th, Hong Kong and China on September 3rd, and the Pakistan women’s team on September 5th.
Jemimah’s injury was examined at the CoE
In the information provided by the BCCI regarding Jemimah Rodrigues, they stated that she suffered a hamstring injury in her right leg during The Hundred tournament in England on August 3. The BCCI medical team examined Jemimah’s injury at the Bengaluru-based Centre of Excellence and found it to be a high-grade tear, meaning a serious injury.
As a result, Jemimah has been ruled out of the Women’s Asia Cup, scheduled to be held in the UAE from August 28, and the subsequent women’s cricket event of the Asian Games in Japan from September 17. Following Jemimah’s exclusion, the BCCI’s women’s selection committee has named Pratika Rawal in the Asia Cup squad in her place.
Speaking of opening batsman Pratika Rawal, who replaced Jemimah Rodrigues in Team India’s squad, she hasn’t played a single T20 match at the international level. Pratika Rawal also hasn’t played a single match in the Women’s Premier League. Therefore, everyone will be watching to see if she gets a chance to play in the playing eleven in the Asia Cup.
