History in Dundee: Scotland’s Lyle Robertson registers best figures by a spinner on ODI debut

Scotland off-spinner Lyle Robertson, on August 13 (Thursday), registered the best bowling figures by a spinner on ODI debut and fourth-best overall. He finished with 6/52 against Canada in Dundee to achieve this record. He beat the record set by Pakistan’s Arafat Minhas, who became the first spinner to pick up a fifer on ODI debut – a feat he achieved against Australia in Rawalpindi in May this year.

Incrdible feat

Incidentally, Scotland pacer Charlie Cassell holds the record for the best bowling figures in ODI history. He picked up 7/21 against Oman in Dundee in 2024.

Coming back to Robertson, who played in the Under-19 World Cup for Scotland in 2022, picked up six of the last seven Canadian wickets to bundle them out for just 177. That helped Scotland to a comfortable 170-run victory after they put up 347/7 – their fourth-highest ODI total – thanks to a magnificent 120 by their captain Richie Berrington and half-centuries from Brandon McMullen (64) and Matthew Cross (51*).

Scotland into the Qualifiers

Scotland were unbeaten in the recent tri-series, featuring Canada and the UAE. After their first match against the UAE was abandoned due to rain, they won three matches in a row to book their place in the World Cup Qualifiers, scheduled for February-March next year. Scotland currently lead the ICC CWC League 2 points table with 45 points from 36 matches.
