Rishabh Pant has stepped down as the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) captain, the franchise confirmed with a post on X. Under Pant, LSG finished at the bottom of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 points table.

“These decisions are never easy. We are grateful for everything Rishabh has brought to this dressing room as captain. Our focus now is on the collective – rebuilding and restructuring to reach the best standards.”
Pant was bought for a record fee of INR 27 crore ahead of IPL 2025 auction and was named captain of the side. IN his first season in charge, LSG finished seventh and have now finished rock bottom. The last time they made it to the playoffs was in 2023.
Pant has struggled for consistency with LSG, managing just 581 runs at 26.40 across two seasons. Moreover, he has scored just two fifties and a century in 26 innings. Pant had initially replaced KL Rahul as captain of the team. Rahul led LSG in their first three seasons, where they finished in the top four twice and once in seventh.
He has since gone on to play for Delhi Capitals (DC) – Pant’s former team.
Who will be LSG’s next captain?
LSG have plenty of captaincy options to pick from. Aiden Markram should be the top contender as he leads the franchise’s SA20 team – Durban Super Giants. Other than him, LSG have Mitchell Marsh, the Australia T20I skipper and also former West Indies captain Nicholas Pooran.
However, if they want an Indian captain to replace Pant, they have the option of going in with Ayush Badoni.
However, LSG have made no announcement about who their next skipper will be.
