A controversy has erupted in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026. Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) batter Angkrish Raghuvanshi was given out obstructing the field against Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) in Lucknow on April 26 (Sunday). He hit the ball to mid-on and looked for a quick single. However, his partner Cameron Green sent him back. While turning back, he seemed to have looked at the throw and changed directions accordingly to block the throw from hitting the stumps.
As it turned out, it hit him while he was diving back into his crease and the LSG fielders went up immediately. The matter was referred to the third umpire, who had no hesitation in adjudging that out.
Raghuvanshi, therefore, became just the fourth player in IPL history to be given out obstructing the field
Players dismissed obstructing the field in IPL
Yusuf Pathan (KKR) vs PWI, Ranchi 2013
Amit Mishra (DC) vs SRH, Visakhapatnam, 2019
Ravindra Jadeja (CSK) vs RR, Chennai, 2024
Angkrish Raghuvanshi (KKR) vs LSG, Lucknow, 2026
The decision left Raghuvanshi, Green and the rest of the dugout stunned. Head coach Abhishek Nayar, too was seen having a word with the fourth official on the sidelines.
What does the law say?
According to Law 37 of the MCC that deals with obstructing the field, “Either batter is out Obstructing the field if, except in the circumstances of 37.2, and while the ball is in play, he/she wilfully attempts to obstruct or distract the fielding side by word or action.”
KKR were reduced to 27/3 after Raghuvanshi was dismissed. Soon, Rovman Powell too was back in the pavilion, putting LSG in command. At the end of the powerplay, KKR were 31/4 with Green and Rinku Singh at the crease.
