India’s interim head coach VVS Laxman said that Vaibhav Sooryavanshi‘s game awareness has improved tremendously in the last six months. The young batsman’s growing maturity is helping him handle pressure situations early in his international career. The 15-year-old silenced his critics in emphatic fashion. He concluded a memorable tour by winning both the ‘Player of the Match’ and ‘Player of the Series’ awards. India won the final T20I by 35 runs on Sunday to clinch the series against Zimbabwe 3-0.

Sooryavanshi scored 151 runs in three innings

Laxman said, “The most impressive thing is how much he has changed as a person. His maturity, understanding and knowledge of the game have improved tremendously in the last six months, and that’s why he has been able to handle difficult situations.” Sooryavanshi scored 151 runs in three innings at an average of 50.33. His brilliant 81 in the final match of the series laid the foundation for India’s victory.

This all came after a disappointing debut series against England, in which he managed only 13, 14 and 15 runs and was dropped from the fifth and final T20I, as India lost the series 0-4. “He played the Under-19 World Cup and within four-five months, he dominated the IPL. We know how tough the competition is in the IPL.

Laxman is currently acting as interim head coach

“The way he has improved himself, grown as an international cricketer, facing the best bowlers not only in India but around the world, and shown the ability, class and talent he possesses,” Laxman said. Laxman is currently acting as interim head coach to allow Gautam Gambhir some rest ahead of next month’s two-Test tour of Sri Lanka.

Laxman further said that Sooryavanshi’s attitude throughout the series was clearly marked by his hunger to improve. He recounted an incident when, despite suffering an injury, the young player was eager to stay on the field and contribute to the team’s cause.
