Rising star Tanish Suri on UAE cricket’s evolution, red-ball ambitions, and the road ahead

Opening batter and wicketkeeper Tanish Suri is quickly making waves as one of the UAE national cricket team’s most promising young talents. Reflecting on his journey from grassroots cricket in Delhi to the international stage in Dubai, Suri shares insights on his development, leadership under captain Rahul, and the evolving landscape of UAE cricket.

Early Beginnings and International Rise

Born in Delhi and raised in Dubai, Suri’s cricketing path began remarkably early. Recalling his introduction to the sport, he explains: “I was just very young, I don’t know if I was in my kindergarten, I think four or five years old… obviously I was not professionally playing at that time and I just got called from one of the PT teachers of ours because I was just very energetic. So that’s I think from where my cricket just started as an enjoyment and then I think turned into a professional career.”

After stellar performances at the under-19 level, Suri made his senior debut for the UAE at just 18 and a half against Afghanistan A. Since then, he has gained valuable experience across franchise leagues and international fixtures.

Team Dynamics and World Cup Aspirations

Following a recent victory over Oman, Suri remains optimistic about the team’s prospects despite a challenging standing in World Cup qualification. Commenting on the team’s progression, he notes: “I think looking at our standings, we’re pretty low right now. I think we will have to be going to Nepal to play to save our status, but I think looking at how the team has been formed and the team has been doing well, I think we’ve put in lots of efforts. I think it’s coming out great as you saw we’ve got our win against Oman today.”

Suri also praised the leadership of new captain Rahul and the mentorship of head coach Lalchand Rajput, noting how Rajput’s extensive experience with the Indian team helps support and motivate players.

Adapting to Red-Ball Cricket and Upcoming Challenges

With the introduction of red-ball cricket initiatives in the UAE to help players transition into longer formats, Suri believes the shift has profoundly benefited the squad. Explaining the tactical differences, he states: “I think the only thing that is different is the gameplay. It takes longer in a day’s… game, that is just giving us… an opportunity and to understand the game and how to play longer, for batsman as well as bowlers…”

As he looks ahead to the upcoming ILT20 season with the Sharjah Warriors—having been retained by Desert Vipers previously—Suri remains focused on his primary goal: dominating the powerplay and anchoring the team’s success.
