West Indies are truly the ‘Dark Horse’ of ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2026 with their attractive attacking brand of cricket. They can play the big shots and can take wickets in a heap in their day, but the lack of consistency is their biggest challenge. This resilience was on full display during the last tournament. After securing a spot in the semi-finals with a gritty chase against England in their final group match, their run came to an abrupt end with a convincing defeat by the eventual champions, New Zealand.
Strength
Their biggest strength is captain Hayley Matthews, currently one of the hottest properties for any of the franchise leagues around the globe, for the value she adds. She is a world-class all-rounder who can turn any match with her lusty batting or canny off-spin bowling. She is a true match-winner, and her team will look for inspiration from the skipper. Matthews and the vice-captain Chinelle Henry will lead the batting and will expect a host of senior all-rounders like Stafanie Taylor and Deandra Dottin to contribute with the bat.
Their batting philosophy is heavily dependent on their boundary-hitting skills, and they will look to clear the boundaries regularly in the English grounds.
Weakness
However, this can also lead to disaster. Some early wickets, especially the wicket of Matthews, can completely derail the batting innings. The young team may be keen on hitting the boundaries, but the strike rotation does not come naturally to them, creating a lack of momentum and resulting in below-par scores. Their fielding is another area of weakness- frequent catch drops and lapses in fielding impact their overall performance.
Opportunity
The relatively unknown players like Zaida James and Ashmini Munisar have made a name for themselves through some eye-catching performances in the Caribbean Premier League. It will be a great opportunity for them to showcase their skills on the biggest stage of their career.
Threat
West Indies have shown their weakness against genuine pace and swing bowling. In true English conditions, that can be their biggest threat, and an early collapse in a key game can make their job very difficult.
West Indies surprised one and all with their dramatic victory in the 2016 T20 World Cup final at the iconic Eden Gardens. Taylor and a very young Matthews were the stars on that occasion, and they will hope for an encore in this edition.
