After 17 years, the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup is returning to England. This victory gives hosts England immense confidence, echoing their previous home triumph. They will now look to replicate those historic moments in another major tournament on home soil.
The last edition of the tournament was not as memorable for England as they failed to reach the knockout stages, as they came third in a group with West Indies and South Africa. All three teams won 3 matches each, but England missed out due to a low net run rate. This time, England are in another tricky group. Their main competitors will be New Zealand and the West Indies. They also have Sri Lanka and two other countries that are part of the British Isles, Scotland and Ireland.
Strength
Their familiarity with the conditions is their biggest strength. They also have some extremely powerful hitters in the team, who can create mayhem for the opposition in the death overs. Freya Kemp also showed glimpses with her 13-ball 39 against India in the second T20I of the ongoing series. They also have players like Danni Wyatt-Hodge who can go for big shots from the very beginning. They also have a great spin bowling attack, including Sophie Ecclestone, Charlie Dean, and an exciting prospect in 18-year-old Tilly Corteen-Coleman, who will be super excited to play against her idol, Ecclestone.
Weakness
They need their spinners to perform as some of their weaknesses are related to death over bowling. Both Lauren Bell and Issy Wong have tendencies to leak runs at the death. If spin-friendly pitches are chosen to favour their spinners, it could expose top-order batters like Sophie Dunkley and Alice Capsey, both of whom have experienced past struggles against turn.
Opportunity
This will be a great platform for their young T20 batters like Kemp and Capsey to showcase their talent and become the next generation of superstars. They would require the support from the seniors like Heather Knight and Nat Sciver-Brunt.
Threat
Sciver-Brunt, the captain, has been recovering from an injury and is expected to be back at the time of the tournament. But in case she misses out, they have to depend on the flexible captaincy style of Charlie Dean, who is leading in the recent series in Sciver-Brunt’s absence.
England have the firepower and the mix of experience and youth required for such a big tournament. They would definitely hope to go all the way and win the trophy at home, something they achieved in the last ICC tournament on British soil when they won the 2017 One Day World Cup, beating India in the final.
