Only four batters in the history of Indian Premier League (IPL) have scored more runs in a season than Vaibhav Sooryavanshi’s 776 in 2026. No batter has ever hit more sixes in a single edition than his 72. And among players with at least 100 runs in a season, nobody has come close to matching his strike rate of 237.30.
For most cricketers, achieving just one of those feats would constitute a career-defining campaign. Sooryavanshi managed all three before turning 16.
As Royal Challengers Bengaluru celebrated their successful title defence at the Narendra Modi Stadium on the final night of May 2026, the spotlight gradually shifted away from the champions. By the time the award ceremony concluded, a 15-year-old from Samastipur, Bihar, had become the story of the season. One award followed another as Sooryavanshi’s remarkable campaign received fitting recognition.

Rajasthan Royals entrusted him with the responsibility of opening the batting in 2025. A year later, he repaid that faith with one of the most extraordinary individual seasons the league has witnessed. His tally of 776 runs places him behind only Virat Kohli (973 in 2016), Shubman Gill (890 in 2023), Jos Buttler (863 in 2022) and David Warner (848 in 2016) on the list of highest run-scorers in a single IPL season.
Sooryavanshi’s power hitting has been the talk of the town since he stepped into the cash-rich league. This season has been a testament to what he is capable of! He has struck at an overwhelming strike rate of 237.30. Nobody has reached the 100-run mark with that strike rate. Romario Shepherd is a distant second with a mere 70 in 2025 striking at 291.66. Also barring Sooryavanshi, only two batters have got 500 or more runs in an IPL season at 200 or more strike-rate Abhishek Sharma (563 at 204.72 in 2026) and Andre Russell (510 at 204.81 in 2019).
When it comes to brutal hitting and blitzkrieg sort of innings, we often associate the Caribbeans. They use their long levers and an enormous range to tonk the ball to every corner of the ground. Over the years, this has been the only technique which has helped them to stay relevant in a rapidly evolving format. If around five years ago, anybody showed optimism about an Indian doing better than the giant Caribbeans, his words would’ve been laughed off. But post 2026 IPL, this is not a reverie anymore. That southpaw from Samastipur has sent the ball out of the rope 72 times and it is highest in an edition by any batter. Earlier only Chris Gayle (59 in 2012 and 51 in 2013), Russell (52 in 2019) were the other two batters to hit 50 maximums in a season.
When it comes to hitting maximums, another statistical input might blow the minds of the readers. Sooryavanshi stands 50th in the list of batters with most career sixes in IPL. He is just 4 sixes short of making it to a three figure mark playing just 449 balls so far. That means he has hit a maximum in every 4.67 balls. In the 50 batters in this list, he has the best balls/six ratio. Andre Russell (6.82, 223 in 1522 balls) is the second name here.
But numbers do not tell you the entire story. “Intent” is currently the most frequently used term in the fast paced format. Where you do not get any time to settle, getting out in the middle and going hammer and tongs from the first ball has become a sacrosanct, Sooryavanshi has passed with distinction marks there. When the senior pros, the respected stars of the game, show extreme caution while playing the number one pacer in the world, the prodigy can throw caution to the wind and flick him with utter disdain over deep midwicket for a big hit in the first ball of their rendezvous. Even a modern day legend like Jasprit Bumrah wore a wry smile on his face, what more could’ve been done?
Patrick James Cummins is a man of few words while talking about his opponents and loves to silence them. But in a press conference, when asked about Vaibhav, he said that “He is my new favorite player”! The talismanic Aussie skipper went for a hat-trick of maximums and those audacious strokes were just beyond anybody’s imagination. As of now, Sooryavanshi has hit five sixes off 12 deliveries off Cummins and struck at 316.7! Nobody in the world has taken Cummins down like that.
Sooryavanshi made headlines making his debut in First Class cricket at the age of 12 years and 284 days. He is the third youngest to do so. Although his numbers do not show his red-ball cricket acumen, his white ball numbers are so impressive that he can don the India colours anytime soon. A whirlwind 175 in the Under-19 world cup final against England, a couple of IPL tons, consecutive nineties in IPL playoff games have stamped his authority and made him a cynosure of all eyes.
The state named Bihar is the native place of a lot of India cricketers. But none of them donned the Indian jersey representing the Bihar Cricket Association. Saba Karim got his international cap playing from Bengal. The legendary Mahendra Singh Dhoni got his cap playing from Jharkhand. Akash Deep and Mukesh Kumar had to move to Bengal to get a footing in the highest level of cricket and played the purest format of the game. With Sooryavanshi, that might change for Bihar. They might see an international cricketer born and brought up in their state. Potentially as early as the next T20I series against Ireland.
