ENG vs NZ: Phillips’ ton puts New Zealand in command as England stagger at The Oval

ENG vs NZ: Host England appears to be in a precarious position in the end of second day of the second test (ENG vs NZ) match being played at the Kensington Oval in London. Glenn Phillips starred with the bat for New Zealand, scoring a century to help the team reach a score of 391. The Kiwi bowlers then wreaked havoc, leaving the English batsmen in a tizzy.

England won the first match but found themselves trailing on the second day of the second Test. In reply to a target of 391, the team was 222 for 6 at the close of play on day two. The second day belonged to the Kiwis. They posted a big total with the bat, and then the bowlers performed brilliantly. The English appeared helpless against Matt Henry, William O’Rourke, and Nathan Smith.

Glenn Phillips thrashed the English bowlers

At one point, New Zealand lost 6 wickets for 263 runs. Glenn Phillips then took the field. It seemed the visitors would be able to score 300 or a little more. However, Phillips proved everyone wrong and scored a century. Phillips scored 100 runs off 135 balls, taking the Black Caps to a score of 391 runs. Phillips became the third player for New Zealand to score centuries in all three formats. Before him, Brendon McCullum and Martin Guptill had achieved this feat.

In addition to Phillips, wicketkeeper-batsman Tom Blendon scored a half-century and 51 runs. Daryl Mitchell (44), Kyle Jamieson (41), and Rachin Ravindra (33) also made significant contributions. For England, Jacob Bethell took three wickets, while Jofra Archer and Matthew Fisher took two wickets each.

After posting a respectable batting score, New Zealand’s bowling effort was also impressive. In response to Kiwis’ 391, England’s opening batsmen made a solid start, adding 45 runs for the first wicket. Ben Duckett was run out for 36. As soon as they got their first wicket, the Kiwi bowlers attacked the English team, taking six wickets on the second day.

England in trouble on the second day itself

For the English team, Emilio Gay (53) batted well and scored a half-century. Captain Joe Root then got set but was dismissed by Matt Henry for 46. Harry Brook and James Reu also failed to make a significant impact and England ended the second day at 222 for 6. The hosts England are still trailing by 169 runs. For New Zealand, Henry and Williams took two wickets each, while Matthew Smith got one wicket.

Brief Scores:

New Zealand 391 all out (Glenn Phillips 100, Tom Blundell 51; Jacob Bethell 3-26, Jofra Archer 2-61) lead England 222-6 (Emilio Gay 53, Joe Root 46; Matt Henry 2-57, William O’Rourke 2-61) by 169 runs.
