AUS vs BAN: Bangladesh had reached 351 for the loss of 6 wickets by the end of play on Day 2 of the first Test (AUS vs BAN). Having bowled Australia out for 198 in the first innings, Bangladesh now holds an overall lead of 153 runs. Tanzid Hasan made history with an innings of 101 runs, becoming the first Bangladeshi batsman to score a Test century on Australian soil. Bangladesh Tightens Its Grip
Bangladesh resumed play on Day 2 with their score at 96/1. Before the team could even reach the 150-run mark, Mominul Haque missed out on a half-century by just one run, finishing with 49. Subsequently, Tanzid Hasan and captain Najmul Hossain Shanto frustrated the Australian bowlers, stitching together a 93-run partnership. Prior to this, Tanzid and Mominul had shared a 102-run stand.
Australia saw a glimmer of hope for a comeback in the 66th over when Nathan Lyon dismissed Tanzid for 101. Mushfiqur Rahim and Najmul Shanto steadied the innings for a while, taking the team’s score to 297. However, Bangladesh lost three wickets within the span of the next 11 runs. Mehidy Hasan and Hasan Mahmud have since thwarted the Australian bowlers’ resurgence, having been at the crease for approximately 25 overs.
Tanzid Hasan’s Historic Century
In Bangladesh’s 26-year Test cricket history, no batsman had previously scored a Test century in Australia. While Shahriar Nafees was the first Bangladeshi to score a Test century against Australia, achieving the feat on home soil. Tanzid Hasan has become the first to score one on Australian territory. The extent of the Australian bowling attack’s helplessness can be gauged from the fact that captain Pat Cummins utilized a total of eight bowlers. The Bangladeshi batsmen have batted for 110 overs, yet the Australian team has completely failed to capitalize on the opportunities that came their way. So far, Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazlewood have claimed two wickets each, while Pat Cummins and Nathan Lyon have managed to dismiss one batsman apiece. Given the score Bangladesh has posted, they will be aiming to secure a lead of at least 200–220 runs.
