ENG vs NZ: Henry Nicholls’ ton leaves England staring at defeat in second test

ENG vs NZ: New Zealand tightened their grip on the second Test against England (ENG vs NZ) at The Oval with a dominant performance on Day 3, ending the day at 252/3 in their second innings and holding a commanding lead of 352 runs.

The visitors first completed England’s first innings for 291 shortly before lunch, securing a valuable 100-run lead. Resuming on 222/6, England hoped to narrow the deficit through Jordan Cox and the lower order. However, New Zealand’s disciplined bowling attack prevented any significant recovery. Matt Henry starred with the ball, claiming a five-wicket haul as England lost their final four wickets for just 69 runs. Tailender Matthew Fisher showed admirable resistance with an unbeaten half-century, but England ultimately fell well short of New Zealand’s first-innings total of 391.

Armed with a substantial lead, New Zealand’s batters capitalised on a flattening Oval surface. Although Jofra Archer provided England with an early breakthrough and Josh Tongue added another wicket, the hosts struggled to maintain pressure as the day progressed.

Henry Nicholls scored a wonderful century

The star of the day was Henry Nicholls, who produced a superb unbeaten 119, his 11th Test century. Displaying patience and authority, the left-hander anchored the innings brilliantly and frustrated England’s bowlers throughout the afternoon and evening sessions. Nicholls found excellent support from Rachin Ravindra, whose fluent 76 formed part of a crucial 161-run third-wicket partnership that effectively batted England out of the contest. Ravindra was eventually trapped lbw by Jacob Bethell, but the damage had already been done.

By stumps, Daryl Mitchell remained unbeaten on 32 alongside Nicholls, leaving New Zealand firmly in control. With a lead already exceeding 350 and seven wickets still in hand, the Black Caps are overwhelming favourites heading into Day 4 as they look to level the three-match series at 1-1.

Brief Scores:

New Zealand 391 & 252/3 (Henry Nicholls 119, Rachin Ravindra 76) lead England 291 (Emilio Gay 53, Matthew Fisher 50; Matt Henry 5-80) by 352 runs.
