England have been clinical in the Women’s T20 World Cup so far, having won both their matches. They beat Sri Lanka by 87 runs in their first match and then beat Ireland by four wickets on June 16 (Tuesday).
They have won two out of two so far, and another win would put them in a comfortable position for a place in the semi-final. However, there was a bit of worry in the England camp, as their skipper Nat Sciver-Brunt walked off the field when she was batting on 48. With nine needed to win, Sciver-Brunt retired out after hitting a boundary, with her stay lasting 37 balls.
Chasing 119, England eventually got to their target with four wickets and 15 balls to spare.
Why did Sciver-Brunt walk off?
Speaking at the post-match presentation, Sciver-Brunt confirmed that she walked off as a precaution. “Yeah, just for caution. Yeah, I felt a bit [of] tightness in my calf, so I thought I’d better not push it. Next time would wait two more runs. Just a precautionary measure,” she said.
Batter Heather Knight reiterated the same at the post-match press conference.
“No, I think it just happened. Just in the moment, just felt a bit of tightness, same calf as before, but that’s all we know really. Just a bit of a precaution from her to, yeah, get herself off the field. And it’ll get assessed, I’m sure, over the next few days. And yeah, fingers crossed she’ll be okay,” Knight, who scored 26 off 23, said when asked about her skipper.
Among the bowlers, Sophie Ecclestone was the best of the lot, finishing with 3/22. Ireland would have felt they were in the game after they had England three down at the powerplay but a 64-run stand between Knight and Sciver-Brunt shattered their chances.
England take on Scotland next at Headingley on June 20, while Ireland face New Zealand in Southampton on June 19.
