Sri Lanka put defending champions New Zealand on brink of elimination

The defending champions, New Zealand, suffered another blow in the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2026. In a seismic Group Stage upset, Sri Lanka scripted history by defeating New Zealand for the very first time in tournament history. The dramatic 5-wicket victory marks a historic milestone for Chamari Athapaththu’s side and leaves the reigning champions, New Zealand, staring into complex mathematical calculations of net run rate after crashing to their second consecutive defeat.

New Zealand women struggle

Opting to bat first, the White Ferns struggled to break free from Sri Lanka’s disciplined bowling squeeze. The captain Amelia Kerr (45 off 36 balls) and experienced Sophie Devine (45 off 30 balls) anchored the innings with a few powerful hits, including the only six of the innings by Devine off Sugandika Kumar’s bowling. However, Sri Lanka’s athletic fielding, highlighted by Kawya Kavindi’s brilliant catch to dismiss Kerr, kept the champions in check. Debutant Nimasha Meepage struck with her very first ball to dismiss Georgia Plimmer, helping restrict New Zealand to a competitive but highly chaseable 150/6.

Sri Lanka’s pursuit began with intent, taking 29 runs from the final two powerplay overs. Though skipper Athapaththu (27) fell shortly after smashing a massive six, she already achieved the goal of setting up a platform for upcoming batters. It was followed by a trademark middle-order wobble that threatened to derail the chase as the Sri Lankans sensationally slipped from a comfortable 45/1 to a precarious 55/4. Then a calamitous mix-up saw Kavisha Dilhari run out with both batters stranded at the same end, the target of 151 looked far away on the horizon.

Nilakshika Silva brings historic win for Sri Lanka in style

This created the perfect stage for the experienced Nilakshika Silva. Playing a masterpiece of composure under immense pressure, Silva struck a magnificent, unbeaten 54 off 37 balls. Alongside Kaushani Nuthyangana (24 off 14), she steadied the ship, mixed occasional boundaries with some frantic running, and guided Sri Lanka home with just two balls to spare.

For New Zealand, title defense has quickly turned into a nightmare. With no points from their first two matches, they now have no room for error. To reach the semi-finals, the White Ferns must win all three remaining games and hope net run rate swings in their favour. They arrived in England expecting another dominant campaign, but now, leaving Southampton exposed and out of answers, their grip on the crown is slipping fast.

Brief scores: Sri Lanka 153/5 (Nilakshika Silva 54*, Kaushini Nuthyangana 24*, Nensi Patel 2-23) beat New Zealand 150/6 (Sophie Devine 45, Amelia Kerr 45, Kavisha Dilhari 2-35) by five wickets

Player of the Match: Nilakshika Silva
