Barbados will bid a final farewell to its greatest sporting hero on Wednesday, July 29, when Sir Garfield Sobers is bestowed with a State Funeral and National Service of Thanksgiving at Kensington Oval. The ceremony, taking place a day after what would have been the legendary all-rounder’s 90th birthday, is expected to bring together government leaders, former cricketers, dignitaries and thousands of admirers to celebrate the extraordinary life of a man widely regarded as the greatest all-round cricketer the game has ever seen.
Barbados PM Mia Amor Mottley paid homage to the legend
Ahead of the funeral, Barbados Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley described Sobers as “A giant among men whose excellence transcended boundaries and generations.” Paying tribute, Mottley wrote, “Today, we should have been welcoming you to 90, a score you passed so many times and made look so easy. I should have been calling to say, “Happy birthday, Sir Garry,” and listening to that unmistakable laugh. Instead, on the eve of your final journey, I find myself trying to say farewell. This embrace now holds a goodbye I did not know I was giving. My heart aches, my friend. Barbados was never going to be ready to let you go. Happy 90th birthday, Sir Garry. Tomorrow, a grateful nation will carry you home.” She also urged citizens to honour Sobers not only for his unmatched cricketing achievements but also for his humility, patriotism and lifelong service to Barbados.
To facilitate the state funeral, authorities have announced extensive traffic restrictions around Kensington Oval. Roads scheduled for closure include sections of Prescod Boulevard, Kensington New Road, Fontabelle Road, President Kennedy Drive, Passage Road and adjoining streets during the funeral procession. Motorists have been advised to avoid the area, while no-parking zones will be enforced along Fontabelle Road, Prescod Boulevard, Kensington New Road, President Kennedy Drive and surrounding streets to ensure smooth movement of the procession and emergency services. Park-and-ride facilities and shuttle buses will be available for members of the public attending the service.
On Tuesday, July 28, which marked Sobers’ 90th birthday, Barbados witnessed an emotional gathering of cricketing greats who came together to celebrate his remarkable legacy. Among those who paid homage were Wes Hall, Wayne Daniel, Vasbert Drakes, Joel Garner, Gordon Greenidge, Charles Griffith, Dale Richards, Philo Wallace, Tino Best, Dwayne Smith and Fidel Edwards. The former players shared cherished memories of Sobers’ brilliance on the field and his personality and aura off it. They described him as a mentor, friend and inspiration.
As Barbados prepares for Wednesday’s state funeral, the island will not merely mourn the passing of a cricket legend but celebrate the life of a national hero whose influence extended far beyond the boundary ropes.
