West Indies failed to produce an impressive batting display for two games in a row as they were bundled out for just 138 by New Zealand in the second One-Day International (ODI) in Guyana on July 13 (Monday). As a result, New Zealand romped home to a comfortable five-wicket victory with more than 17 overs to spare.
The game was set up by an excellent spell from spinner Jayden Lennox, who finished with figures of 5/19 – his maiden ODI fifer. Michael Bracewell (2/51) and skipper Mitchell Santner (2/21) too were among the wickets as the Blackcaps made light work of the West Indies’ batting.
Opener John Campbell top-scored with 43, but none of the batters kicked on. Amir Jangoo (24) got a start, but some disciplined bowling kept him and the other batters in check.
WI fight but not enough
Chasing 139, West Indies kept picking up wickets at regular intervals and had New Zealand at 96/5 in the 23rd over to give them a sniff. However, an unbroken 45-run stand between Tom Latham (37) and Bracewell (24) eventually took New Zealand home.
The five-match series is now level at 1-1 with West Indies winning the first game by seven wickets. The two teams will now clash in the crucial third ODI on July 16 (Thursday) in Guyana before the action shifts to Barbados for the remainder of the series.
