Left-arm spinner Jayden Lennox proved too hot to handle for the West Indies in the third One-Day International (ODI) in Guyana, as his four-wicket haul helped New Zealand to a comprehensive victory. Lennox finished with 4/52 as West Indies were bundled out for just 140 in the 38th over. The 31-year-old has been in excellent form of late, having picked up his maiden fifer in the previous ODI.
Another WI batting collapse
It was a batting collapse once again that led to West Indies’ downfall. From 121/3, they could add only 19 more runs to their total. Other than Lennox, skipper Mitchell Santner too contributed with 2/15, while Michal Bracewell (2/33) and Jacob Duffy (1/15) also chipped in with tight spells.
West Indies opener John Campbell had to retire out early in the game after he sustained a hamstring injury. Once he departed, only Keacy Carty (48) and Shimron Hetmyer (26) managed to stitch together a 49-run stand. There were no significant stands before and after that, which led to West Indies registering such an under-par total.
Lawes’ spell not good enough
With spinners having a massive say at the Providence Stadium, West Indies unleashed their three premier spinners on New Zealand right from the start. Out of them, youngster Vitel Lawes (3/39) was the pick of the bowlers, but with such a small total on the board, New Zealand got home by six wickets with over 10 overs to spare.
West Indies seemed to have a chance when the Black Caps were 89/4 in the 27th over, but an unbeaten 52-run stand between Dean Foxcroft (22) and Tom Latham (31) was good enough to secure the win for their team. Henry Nicholls (24), Will Young (23) and Daryl Mitchell (28) too made useful contributions with the bat.
With this win, New Zealand now lead the five-match series 2-1. The action now moves to Barbados for the next game on July 19 (Sunday).
