Team India finally secured its first victory on the England tour as they defeated England by 6 wickets in the first ODI at Edgbaston in Birmingham. With this win, Team India took a 1-0 lead in the three-match series. In the first ODI, England, batting first, scored 258 runs, thanks to half-centuries from Joe Root and Liam Dawson.
In reply, Team India won by 6 wickets in the 46th over. Captain Shubman Gill played a brilliant innings of 80 runs for India before retiring hurt. Axar Patel, who took four wickets with the ball, also performed brilliantly with the bat. Axar played a match-winning innings of 57 runs. Washington Sundar scored a crucial 52 runs. Both returned unbeaten, helping India win the match.
Rohit-Virat failed, but India still won
In response to England’s target of 259 runs, Team India lost the wickets of veteran batsmen Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli early. Rohit Sharma scored 11 runs off 21 balls, while Virat Kohli scored just five runs off six balls. India lost two wickets for 48 runs. Subsequently, Shubman Gill and Shreyas Iyer shared a brilliant 109-run partnership. Gill looked in excellent form from the start.
Shreyas Iyer was run out after scoring 35 runs off 53 balls. Captain Gill was on 80 runs off 75 balls when he experienced back pain while batting and retired hurt. Washington Sundar and Axar Patel then took charge. Sundar scored 52 runs off 63 balls with the help of four fours and a six. Axar Patel then scored 57 runs off 52 balls. The two shared a brilliant century stand of 102 runs.

Earlier, England had made a meaty start to the match. At one stage, England were 61 for no loss, but then lost six wickets for 107 runs. Ben Duckett was dismissed for 43, Jacob Bethell for 14, Harry Brook for 1, Jos Buttler for 5, and Sam Curran for 0. Joe Root then made an unbeaten 76 and Liam Johnson for 68. The two players added 121 runs for the seventh wicket in 134 balls to take the team to a challenging total.
Axar Patel took the most wickets for India with four wickets. He dismissed four English batsmen for 62 runs in 9.5 overs. Prasidh Krishna and Gurnur Brar took two wickets each. Jasprit Bumrah and Shivam Dube each took one wicket.
