Harmanpreet Kaur has stepped down as captain of the Indian women’s cricket team, ending a leadership stint that delivered some of the biggest milestones in the country’s cricket history. Smriti Mandhana, currently the vice-captain, is the frontrunner to take over across formats.
The decision was taken after a BCCI review meeting involving secretary Devajit Saikia, head coach Amol Muzumdar and Smriti Mandhana. Harmanpreet is expected to remain an important member of the playing group despite relinquishing the captaincy.
The veteran all-rounder took charge of the ODI side in 2022 and became India’s all-format captain in 2023. Her tenure included India’s historic Women’s World Cup triumph in 2025, followed by the Women’s Asia Cup and Asian Games gold in 2026.
‘I feel I have done my duty’
Harmanpreet confirmed her decision in an emotional social media post, describing it as one of the toughest calls of her career. “This is not an easy decision. It carries years of memories, emotions, sacrifices,” she wrote. “I feel I have done my duty.” She also made it clear that stepping down as captain does not mean stepping away from international cricket, saying she remains committed to contributing to the team as a player.
Smriti Mandhana now appears the natural successor. The 29-year-old opener has already served as Harmanpreet’s deputy and has considerable leadership experience, including captaining India in the latter’s absence. The BCCI is expected to formally announce the new captain soon, with Mandhana widely tipped to begin the next chapter of India’s leadership.
