India asserted overwhelming control over the historic one-off Test at Lord’s, ending Day 2 with a commanding 269-run lead over England. Powered by debutant seamer Kranti Gaud’s historic five-wicket haul and another silky unbeaten half-century from vice-captain Smriti Mandhana, the visitors closed on 154 for 1 in their second innings to leave the hosts facing a steep mountain to climb.
Resuming the morning at 21 for 1 in reply to India’s first-innings total of 285, England hoped to lay a solid foundation. Instead, they ran headlong into an inspired spell of seam bowling from 22-year-old Kranti Gaud. Operating with lethal precision and subtle movement off the pitch, Gaud struck early to nick off Maia Bouchier (23) before nipping one back to clean-bowled Alice Capsey for 9. When Sayali Satghare trapped the experienced campaigner Heather Knight leg before for 6, England were reeling at 47 for 4.
Amy Jones (52) and captain Nat Sciver-Brunt (44) counterattacked with a brisk 84-run stand to steady England, with Jones driving fluently on her way to a 59-ball half-century. India broke through just before lunch when Jones chipped off-spinner Sneh Rana to short leg.
Gaud returned after the break to strike the decisive blow, trapping Sciver-Brunt lbw. She then swiftly removed the tail to finish with 5 for 37, becoming the first woman bowler to earn a place on the Lord’s Test bowling honours board. She joined 11 distinguished Indian cricketers on that list, including Mohammad Nissar, who like Gaud, took five wickets in India men’s first Test at Lord’s 94 years earlier. England were bowled out for 170, conceding a significant 115-run lead.
Holding a handsome advantage, India’s openers batted with supreme confidence in the third session. Smriti Mandhana and Shafali Verma launched a punishing assault on England’s tired attack, sharing an 88-run opening partnership. Verma struck a lively 33 before lofting Sophie Ecclestone to the substitute Emma Lamb at long-on, but the breakthrough brought no respite for the hosts.
Mandhana continued her pristine form, following up her first-innings 83 with a sublime, unbeaten 69. She found fluent support in Yastika Bhatia (39 not out), with the pair compiling an unbroken 66-run stand before stumps were drawn.
At 154 for 1, India will enter Day 3 with an overall lead of 269 runs and in complete control of the contest, poised to set England an almost insurmountable fourth-innings target at the Home of Cricket.
