Sri Lanka women’s team captain Chamari Athapaththu made history on September 2 (Wednesday) by taking a hat-trick and a seven-wicket haul against Indonesia in the Asia Cup. She became the first Sri Lankan woman to complete a hat-trick in the Women’s Asia Cup. Additionally, she became the first Sri Lankan bowler to claim seven wickets in a T20 International match.

Athapaththu became the first player — across both men’s and women’s Asia Cup T20 matches — to take seven wickets in a single game. Playing against Indonesia in a Group B match at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium, Athapaththu bowled 3.3 overs and took 7 wickets for just 5 runs.

Became the first bowler to take a hat-trick

She became the second captain ever to achieve a seven-wicket haul in T20Is. Furthermore, she became the first Sri Lankan to take a hat-trick in T20 International cricket and the first bowler to achieve a hat-trick in the history of the Asia Cup T20.

After the match, she said, “Actually, I saw the way Indonesia played and bowled. We struggled a lot in the middle. As a senior batting unit, we need to adapt to these conditions and play in a positive way. That’s the most important thing. But unfortunately, we lost a couple of wickets. I think we did not adapt to the condition. Yeah, this is good learning from us for the next game.”

The Sri Lankan added, “We need to talk about a lot of things, especially our batting. So we need to talk a lot and we have to do a little bit homework in the dressing room, and we will bounce back in the next game as a batting unit, and bowlers and the fielding unit done a really good job.”
