After being bowled out for 64 runs in the first innings, the Bangladeshi team managed to score only 95 runs in the second innings. For the first time in Test history, the Bangladesh team failed to reach the 100-run mark in either innings. After losing the first Test, Australia won this match by an innings and 51 runs.
Australia had scored 210 runs in their first innings. While 18 batters were dismissed on the first day in Mackay, 12 wickets fell across just two sessions on the second day. The match (AUS vs BAN) concluded in a mere 125 overs. Consequently, the two-match Test series ended in a 1-1 draw. Bangladesh was touring Australia for a Test series after a gap of 23 years.
Bangladesh’s batting faltered in both innings
Mitchell Starc gave Australia a brilliant start with the ball in the second innings as well. He dismissed Shadman Islam and Mominul Haque off consecutive deliveries in his second over. Subsequently, Pat Cummins ended Tanzid Hasan Tamim’s innings. After three wickets fell for 24 runs, captain Najmul Hossain Shanto and Mushfiqur Rahim shared a 27-run partnership. Nathan Lyon broke the stand by dismissing Shanto, after which the collapse resumed.
Bangladesh was bowled out shortly after the tea break on the second day. Mushfiqur Rahim remained unbeaten on 29 at one end, while captain Shanto played the highest-scoring innings of 31 runs. For Australia, Mitchell Starc claimed 4 wickets, while Pat Cummins and Nathan Lyon took 3 wickets each. Cummins conceded only 10 runs in his 10 overs.
Mitchell Starc took 10 wickets in the match
Mitchell Starc was the standout performer in Australia’s victory. In the first innings (AUS vs BAN), he took 6 wickets for just 12 runs. He had completed a five-wicket haul within just 22 deliveries of his spell. Starc claimed four wickets in the second innings. He took a total of 10 wickets for 51 runs in the match—his second-best figures in a Test. This marks the fourth time Starc has taken 10 or more wickets in a single match.
Australia’s first innings folded for 210 runs during the opening session of the second day. For Bangladesh, left-arm fast bowler Shoriful Islam took 7 wickets for 48 runs; this stands as the best performance by any Bangladeshi fast bowler in Test cricket. Cameron Green top-scored for the Aussie team with an innings of 67 runs (AUS vs BAN).
