Sir Garfield Sobers, one of cricket’s greatest players, has passed away at the age of 89. The former West Indies all-rounder breathed his last at his home in Barbados.
His 90th birthday was just two weeks away, on July 28, 2026. Sobers left behind two sons, Daniel and Matthew, and an adopted daughter, Genevieve. Between 1954 and 1974, Sobers represented the West Indies in 93 Test matches. His all-round abilities earned him considerable renown in cricket.
Gary Sobers scored 8032 runs in 93 Test matches at an average of 57.78, including 26 centuries and 30 half-centuries. His best score was 365*. He also took 235 wickets with the ball. Gary Sobers played in one ODI, taking just one wicket.
Rohit Sharma’s last match will not be at Lord’s, confirms BCCI
The BCCI on Friday dismissed speculation about Rohit Sharma’s future, stating that he will continue to play for India after Sunday’s third ODI against England at Lord’s. A report claimed Rohit would play his last ODI at Lord’s, but BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia dismissed the report as baseless.
Putting an end to rumors, the BCCI Secretary has confirmed that the third ODI against England at Lord’s will not be Rohit Sharma’s last match in this format. This comes after reports that the final match of the series could be Rohit’s last, sparking discussions on social media among fans and experts about his retirement. However, the Secretary has clarified that the 39-year-old will continue playing as long as he is part of the team’s plans.
“There are a lot of speculations going on in the media about Rohit Sharma’s future. I want to firmly assert that there has been no such discussion that Rohit will be playing his last match at Lord’s on Sunday,” Saikia stated.
Former Indian cricketer Manjot Kalra arrested for bribing a player
Former Indian Under-19 cricketer Manjot Kalra has been arrested in Sri Lanka on charges of bribing a player in the Lanka Premier League (LPL). Kalra is the co-owner of the LPL team Jaffna Kings. According to police, the arrest came just hours before the start of the tournament’s sixth season.
Kalra, 27, was taken into custody by the Sri Lankan police’s Special Investigations Unit, which investigates sports-related crimes. He was produced before a magistrate, who remanded him in judicial custody until July 31. His associate, Yuvaraj Pushpa, has also been arrested in connection with the case.
According to Sri Lankan police, Kalra is accused of offering money to a player associated with the Lanka Premier League. Investigating agencies stated that the player reported the alleged offer to authorities approximately 10 days ago. The court was informed that a complaint in this matter was filed by Bhanuka Rajapaksa, Avishka Fernando, Dunith Welalage, and two other players.
Mohammad Nawaz fails dope test, ICC bans him for 3 months
Pakistan left-arm spinner Mohammad Nawaz has been found guilty of violating the ICC Anti-Doping Code. Nawaz has admitted his guilt and has been banned for three months. The 32-year-old Nawaz underwent a doping test in Colombo, Sri Lanka. His sample was taken after the match against the Netherlands during the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 on February 7.
The test revealed traces of a prohibited substance (Carboxy-THC) in Nawaz’s body, which is prohibited under the ICC Anti-Doping Code. Nawaz has admitted his guilt and proved that he used this prohibited substance out of competition and that it had no connection to enhancing his athletic performance.
