The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is set to conduct a comprehensive review of India’s underwhelming T20I campaign in Ireland and England after the ongoing white-ball tour concludes later this month.
Team India, under new T20I skipper Shreyas Iyer, are yet to win a game on the tour. They lost the two-match T20I series against Ireland in Belfast 0-2 and trail England 0-3 in the five-match series, with one match remaining in Southampton. The opening T20I in Durham was washed out due to rain. India will also surrender the No. 1 spot in the ICC T20I rankings if they fail to win the fifth and final match.
A temporary phase?
According to BCCI sources, the review meeting will focus solely on the team’s performances during the tour, analysing the reasons behind the disappointing results and identifying areas that require course correction ahead of future assignments. The exercise is being viewed as a routine performance assessment rather than a major administrative overhaul.
Sources also maintained that there is no discussion regarding the future of head coach Gautam Gambhir for now. The former India opener continues to enjoy the board’s confidence, with his tenure remaining secure through the 2027 ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup as per the existing roadmap.
The reigning T20I world champions’ recent struggles have raised questions over the team’s adaptability and execution in English conditions. However, the BCCI considers the poor run to be a temporary phase and expects the side to bounce back in the upcoming three-match ODI series, which begins in Birmingham on July 14.
Review after England ODIs
The review is expected to take place after the ODI series concludes on July 19, when the squad returns from England. Senior members of the team management are expected to be part of the discussions.
India are scheduled to travel to Zimbabwe in the third week of July for a three-match T20I series beginning on July 23. With Gambhir set to be rested for the tour, VVS Laxman will take charge as head coach.
Former India all-rounder Hrishikesh Kanitkar and former left-arm spinner Sunil Joshi are also expected to join the support staff as batting and bowling coaches, respectively, for the series.
