India A women secure a dominant 7-wicket victory over England A in first ODI

India A women kicked off their unofficial one-day bilateral series against England A Women in commanding fashion, registering a comprehensive 7-wicket victory thanks to the spinners and top order batters at the County Ground in Hove. After winning the toss, Indian skipper Harleen Deol elected to field first, exploiting a lively pitch that offered plenty of pace and bounce.

The choice to bowl paid immediate dividends. India A’s opening bowling tandem exploited the movement on offer, keeping the English openers on a tight leash. Seamer Jintimani Kalita broke through early, dismissing Jodi Grewcock for just 2 runs to break the initial stand.

Tight bowling by India A women

England A women struggled to build any significant momentum during the primary phases of their innings. Opener Ella McCaughan battled hard for a gritty 19 off 38 deliveries alongside Grace Scrivens. However, the disciplined lines maintained by the Indian attack, spearheaded by the economical spells of Kalita and Shabnam Shakil, drastically choked the run-flow. The spinners also took full advantage of that as the trio of Vaishnavi Sharma, Niki Prasad, and Minnu Mani bowled 25 overs between them to pick up 3 wickets, conceding just 98 runs. Middle-order errors and exceptional ground fielding by the visitors consistently dismantled brewing partnerships, ultimately restricting the hosts to a below-par total. Scrivens top-scored with a gritty 88 as Charis Pavely supported with 54 in a 109-run stand with Scrivens.

Matured chase by India A women

Chasing a modest target under brightening skies, the India A batters exhibited absolute clarity and composure. Despite an initial hiccup, the top order laid a sturdy foundation to ensure there were no structural collapses. All five Indian batters crossed 20 with fifties from Tejal Hasabnis (57*) and the captain Deol (53).

The chase was defined by calculating risk-taking and excellent rotation of strike. Boundary-hitting at crucial junctures pushed the English bowlers onto the defensive on their home turf. A commanding partnership o7 between Hasabnis and Deol in the middle overs took the game completely out of the hosts’ grasp. Exhibiting great technical maturity against both pace and spin, the Indian batters wrapped up the chase in the 46th over with 7 wickets to spare.

This dominant performance gives India A crucial 1-0 advantage in the three-match 50-over showcase. With the action moving to Taunton for the subsequent fixtures, England A women will have to rapidly reassess their top-order batting approach if they hope to square the series. For India-A, it was a perfectly executed blueprint of disciplined bowling backed up by an authoritative chase.
