England’s tournament veterans rode out an early storm to clinch a hard-fought four-wicket victory over a spirited Ireland side at the Rose Bowl. Despite sudden swings in momentum, England’s experience proved decisive as they overcame an alarming top-order collapse to chase down a modest target of 119.
The contest was plagued by a damp build-up, with persistent rain forcing a delayed toss and threatening to shorten the match. When the skies finally cleared enough for play, no overs were deducted. After winning the toss, England captain Nat Sciver-Brunt elected to bowl first, eager to unleash her attack under heavy, damp skies.

The English bowlers capitalized immediately on the helpful conditions. Both Lauren Bell and Linsey Smith picked up one wicket each before Charlie Dean’s first wicket, leaving the visitors reeling at 25 for 3 inside the first five overs, losing their top order, including the captain, Gaby Lewis.
Ireland attempted a brave counterattack through Orla Prendergast, who struck a usual fiery 26 off 18 balls. However, England’s spinners showed their class, yielding an extraordinary 60 dot balls across the collective bowling effort. Sophie Ecclestone displayed her world-class abilities, as she finished with a masterful 3-22, well-supported by Charlie Dean’s 2 for 11.
Just as Ireland looked completely down and out, Louise Little provided a late burst of hope, dominating the 10th wicket partnership. Smashing four boundaries off Lauren Bell in a 17-run final over, Little took Ireland to a defendable 118 for 9, giving the youngest squad in the tournament genuine hope.

England’s early collapse recovered by Nat Sciver-Brunt
Ireland’s hope quickly grew during a chaotic power play in England’s chase. Defending a modest total, the visitors shocked the home crowd by taking three wickets in the space of 10 balls. Aimee Maguire swung the momentum in the fifth over, dismissing opener Amy Jones and then Danni Wyatt-Hodge two deliveries later. In the next over, Prendergast removed Alice Capsey with a pinpoint yorker through her defence. Suddenly, the tournament favourites were crumbling at 35 for 3, and a massive upset looked on the cards.
However, skipper Nat Sciver-Brunt and the experienced Heather Knight stepped to the crease and instantly altered the game’s fate. The duo put on a masterclass in strike rotation, forging a crucial 64-run partnership for the fourth wicket. They took timely singles, minimized risks, and punished the occasional loose delivery to steadily dismantle Ireland’s momentum.
Prendergast provided some hope by breaking the partnership, trapping Knight lbw for 26. England still had a brief scare as Sciver-Brunt retired out on 48 and Freya Kemp was run out for 2, but the decisive work was already done. Charlie Dean and Danielle Gibson stayed calm to steer England to 119 for 6 with 15 balls remaining, preserving their perfect ICC Women’s T20 World Cup campaign run.
Brief scores: England 119/6 in 17.3 overs (Nat Sciver-Brunt 48; Orla Prendergast 2-17) beat Ireland 118/9 in 20 overs (Louise Little 26*; Sophie Ecclestone 3-22, Charlie Dean 2-11) by 4 wickets
