ICC Women’s T20 WC 2026: Wyatt-Hodge century propels England to record-breaking opening win

England, the tournament hosts, began the 10th edition of the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup with a commanding 87-run victory over Sri Lanka in front of a massive crowd at Edgbaston. Anchored by an unbeaten century from opener Danni Wyatt-Hodge, England compiled an imposing 219/1 and subsequently claimed an 87-run victory to underline their credentials as favourites at the outset of the tournament.

Danni Wyatt-Hodge’s century sets the tone

After Sri Lanka won the toss and elected to bowl first, they were quickly pegged back by a masterclass in aggressive opening batting. Wyatt-Hodge and wicketkeeper-batter Amy Jones laid a flawless foundation and went on to orchestrate a devastating 135-run opening partnership. Jones played an exceptional supporting role with a fluent 53 off just 39 balls.

After Jones departed, Wyatt-Hodge took full control of the innings. She used the sweep effectively and punished any width offered by the Sri Lankan bowlers. Her century came with a boundary, making her only the second England batter to score a hundred in a Women’s T20 World Cup. England Women then added 26 runs in the final over to close on 219/1, surpassing their previous tournament record. Wyatt-Hodge remained unbeaten on 105 from 62 balls.

Clinical England bowling restricts Sri Lanka’s chase

Chasing a daunting target of 220, Sri Lanka’s response never found its rhythm against a disciplined and clinical English bowling attack. Deprived of early momentum, losing three wickets in the powerplay, including that of captain Athapaththu, the visitors never recovered. They struggled to form partnerships and kept losing wickets at regular intervals.

Chamari Athapaththu’s side attempted to remain competitive. However, England’s bowling left no room for error and Sri Lanka were limited to 132 in their 20 overs. Nat-Sciver Brunt’s team sealed a comprehensive and authoritative victory to open their home campaign. Wyatt-Hodge, fittingly, was named Player of the Match for driving a record-breaking, dominant England performance.

Brief Scores:

England Women 219/1 in 20 overs (Danni Wyatt-Hodge 105*, Amy Jones 53; Malki Madara 1/51) beat Sri Lanka Women 132 in 20 overs (Nilakshika Silva 39, Harshitha Samarawickrama 29; Freya Kemp 4/22) by 87 runs

Player of the Match: Danni Wyatt-Hodge
