In the first match of the tri-series being played between India A and Sri Lanka A, rising Indian cricket star Vaibhav Sooryavanshi received the historic opportunity to wear the Team India jersey for the first time. In this debut match, Indian team captain Tilak Varma won the toss and elected to bat first. With this new beginning for India, fans’ eyes were fixed on young opener Vaibhav.

Vaibhav Sooryavanshi scored just 14 runs

Opening the innings, Vaibhav Sooryavanshi showed positive intent from the moment he arrived at the crease, but he failed to convert his start into a big score. In his brief 12-ball innings, Vaibhav scored 14 runs, hitting three brilliant boundaries. He attempted to power a full-length delivery from Sri Lankan fast bowler Mohamed Shiraz over mid-off and straight to the boundary, but the bat swung in his hand.

The ball flew high into the air towards mid-off, where Sri Lanka A captain Sahan Arachchige dived to his left to take a superb catch, inches above the ground. Vaibhav’s dismissal was a huge success for Sri Lanka, as he could have held on to India’s chances of achieving a massive total. This led to wild celebrations in the Sri Lankan camp. However, Ruturaj Gaikwad anchored the innings with a brilliant 101, while skipper Tilak Varma contributed 60 to bring India A back on track as India A posted 277/6 in their 50 overs.

Vaibhav starred in IPL 2026

Before his debut, Vaibhav Sooryavanshi made headlines with his aggressive batting in the 2026 IPL season. Playing for Rajasthan Royals, this young, ferocious batsman provided the team with strong starts on numerous occasions. He scored 776 runs in 16 matches at a strike rate of around 237. Vaibhav not only won the Orange Cap for the season, but also set several other significant records.
