Sarah Taylor joins England men’s team as fielding coach
Former England Women’s wicketkeeper Sarah Taylor has been appointed as the men’s Test fielding coach for the forthcoming series against New Zealand. She has been appointed on a short-term basis as cover for Carl Hopkinson, who is currently working with the Mumbai Indians in the Indian Premier League. Rob Key, England men’s director of cricket, announced the same.
Key said, “I just think she’s one of the best in the business at what she does. She’s been outstanding, and she’s worked a lot with Andrew Flintoff and Ed Barney [performance director]. They can’t speak highly enough of her. So from what we can see, she’s one of the best in the business.”
Liam Dawson retires from first-class cricket
Liam Dawson, the Hampshire all-rounder, has announced his retirement from first-class cricket with immediate effect. The 36-year-old scored 18 hundreds and took 380 wickets in his career spanning over 20 seasons. He was named Men’s Player of the Year at the Professional Cricketers’ Association awards in 2024, as well as Overall Domestic MVP and County Championship Player of the Year, before making a Test return to the England side last summer after an eight-year gap. Dawson featured in four Tests for England.
Dawson said, “I’ve decided to retire from first-class cricket. It’s a decision that I haven’t taken lightly but I feel for the benefit of prolonging my career in white-ball cricket, the time is right.” He added, “I’m extremely proud to have played over 200 games for Hampshire and have had some amazing memories with so many players over the years. I’m fully committed to playing white-ball cricket for Hampshire and continuing the success we’ve had.”
Barbados Royals to return to original name and colour
Barbados Royals have been relaunched as Barbados Tridents ahead of the Caribbean Premier League. After playing the first eight seasons of the league as Barbados Royals, they were renamed to Tridents in 2021. They will also return to the national colours of Barbados in recognition of the “country’s deep cricketing history and enduring national pride”. Reportedly, the Barbados government will also be a “minority co-investor” in the franchise. The rebranding will also extend to the women’s team.
Manoj Badale, lead owner of Royals Sports Group, said, “Relaunching the franchise as the Barbados Tridents, playing in the national colours, is a powerful statement of pride and intent. We remain fully committed to Barbados, to the CPL, and to one clear ambition: sustained success, with both the men’s and women’s CPL titles brought home to the island”
