Drama engulfed the Ekana Stadium, Lucknow, as Mohammed Shami’s six off the last ball took the match into the super over. Needing 17 off the last over, Kartik Tyagi bowled a couple of no-balls, which Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) cashed in on and took the game to the super over – the first one of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026.

Given a golden chance to win the game, LSG scored just one in the super over, as Sunil Narine got rid of Nicholas Pooran and Aiden Markram in a span of three balls.
Rinku does it again
Rinku Singh took just one delivery to hit the winning runs. He has been Kolkata Knight Riders’ (KKR) star in this match. He slammed an unbeaten 83 off 51 with the bat, took four catches on the field and hit the winning runs in the super over.

With this loss, LSG have lost five matches in a row for the first time in their history. They had lost four matches in a row, but in 2026 have gone one better and made it five. Their string of losses began with an eight-wicket loss against Gujarat Titans (GT), followed by a five-wicket loss to Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB). Then came two more massive defeats – a 54-run loss to Punjab Kings (PBKS) and then a loss to Rajasthan Royals (RR) by 40 runs.
With this loss, Rishabh Pant’s team go to the bottom of the table with four points from eight matches, KKR, on the other hand, jump two spots to move to eighth. LSG have finished outside the top four in two consecutive seasons, and as things stand, their chances of making it to the playoffs seem slim.
However, LSG will have a week to regroup, as they next take on Mumbai Indians (MI) on May 4 at the Wankhede Stadium. “We definitely need a break. We are going to refresh,” Pant said after the loss.
