Bangladesh achieve historic feat, beat Sri Lanka first time in WODI

Bangladesh Women registered their first ODI win ever over Sri Lanka Women and beat them by three wickets in the first match of the ongoing series. In a tightly fought affair, the chase for the hosts was led by Sharmin Akhter, who scored a stunning 86 that included 13 fours.

Sharmin recorded the highest-ever score by a Bangladesh batter in a successful women’s ODI chase. She surpassed her own score of 72 against Ireland in 2024. This was also overall the highest-ever score by a Bangladesh batter in a run chase, beating Nigar Sultana Joty’s 77 against Sri Lanka at the ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup 2025.

A dramatic chase led by Sharmin Akhter

Chasing 206 runs, Bangladesh lost early wickets and were reduced to 5/2 in just 1.3 overs. However, Sharmin and Sobhana Mostary took charge of the recovery soon. Mostary was retired hurt for 41* after stabilising the innings with Sharmin. Once she left with the total on 121/3, Sharmin found another ally in Shorna Akter (35). Thanks to the stellar 86 by Sharmin, eventually Bangladesh won the match by three wickets with 9 balls remaining despite Dewmi Vihanga (3-43) shattering their middle-order. Bangladesh lost four wickets with just 7 runs required for the win. Nahida Akter and Sulatana Khatun calmly crossed the final hurdle.

Earlier, Sri Lanka chose to bat first but failed to put a good score on the board. Ritu Moni (3/36) and Nahida Akter (2/38) took frequent wickets to dismantle the Sri Lankan batting. Imesha Dulani (52) and Hansima Karunaratne (54) helped the total past 200-run mark as Sri Lanka scored 205/9.

This win came in the first of the three-match ODI series between these two sides in Bangladesh. The next match of the three-match ODI series, which is a part of the ICC Women’s Championship 2025-29, will be played on April 22.
