Chris Gayle announced as co-owner of Glasgow franchise in ETPL

The European T20 Premier League (ETPL) on April 20 (Monday) announced former West Indies batter Chris Gayle as co-owner and global brand ambassador of Glasgow Mugafians. The team will be based in Glasgow and will represent Scotland in the tournament.

The team is owned by Tansha Batra of the Mugafi Group – a media, entertainment, and IP platform founded by Vipul Agrawal. Gayle, who is the highest run-getter and the highest century-maker in T20 cricket, was last active on the field in 2022 when he played in the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL). However, he is yet to announce his retirement from T20 cricket.

The inaugural edition of the ETPL will be played between August 26 and September 20. The tournament will feature six franchises from Glasgow, Amsterdam, Edinburgh, Dublin, Belfast, and Rotterdam, and as many as 33 matches will be played in the tournament.

Gayle is not the only cricketer to own a franchise. Amsterdam is backed by former Australia captain Steve Waugh, while Belfast is co-owned by Glenn Maxwell.

What did Gayle say?

“Stepping into the role of co-owner of Glasgow Mugafians marks an exciting new chapter for me. The ETPL is already creating waves globally, and having played in franchise leagues around the world, I’m confident this will be something special. Europe represents cricket’s final frontier, and the ETPL has the potential to unravel promising local talent and nurture future heroes who will strengthen the sport in that region. I can’t wait to get started on this new journey,” Gayle said.
