Delhi Capitals (DC) won five of their first six matches in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 but slipped up from there as they failed to make the playoffs. There were plenty of learnings for Axar Patel, who took charge of DC for the first time last season following the departure of Rishabh Pant.
However, the all-rounder believes that there is much more clarity in the way they want to play in the upcoming season, as DC look to make a strong start when they open their campaign against Lucknow Super Giants (LSG0 on April 1.
“What excites me the most is the energy in the group. When players are motivated and ready to give their best, it reflects on the field. As a captain, that gives you confidence that the team is moving in the right direction and building something strong together,” Axar said.
Second year as captain, there is more clarity in how we want to play as a team. Last season, you learn a lot about situations, about players and about yourself as a leader. Now the focus is on being positive and aggressive, but also building trust within the group. When players feel backed, performances follow and that is the environment we want to create,” he added.
DC head coach Hemang Badani has also backed Axar to come good in the upcoming season.
“He understands the environment and what it takes to lead in a tournament like this. We saw some very strong phases last season, and that reflects the potential of this group. Continuity in leadership gives us a chance to build on that and move forward with more clarity,” Badani said.
DC will have to cope without Mitchell Starc in the first few games as the Australia pacer looks to manage his workload after featuring in all five Ashes Tests. The good news for the Capitals is that their other pacer Dushmantha Chameera has received a NOC from Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) and will be available right from the start.
