The legacy of Harmanpreet Kaur: The leader who claimed eternity

Harmanpreet Kaur stepped down as India captain, closing one of the most influential leadership chapters in women’s cricket. Her journey continues as a player, but the armband leaves her with a legacy few can match- fearless batting, hard-earned belief and the World Cup India had chased for decades. All these came along with more than 9,000 international runs and 75 international wickets for India combining all three formats.

Derby 2017: The innings that ignited the fire

On July 20, 2017, Indian women’s cricket stepped out of the shadows. The stage was a rain-shortened World Cup semi-final against Australia in Derby. Harmanpreet’s unbeaten 171 off 115 balls was power, nerve and freedom in one unforgettable innings. Even with cramp, she kept clearing the ropes and carried India into the final. More than a match-winner, it became a signal to a generation of girls. It was evident that India could take on the best and overwhelm them. Only very few innings played by Indian men like Kapil Dev’s 175 during the 1983 World Cup at Tunbridge Wells can match the importance of that innings for Indian Women’s cricket.

The final-over heist and Harman’s nerves of steel

If Derby showed her brilliance, the 2017 World Cup Qualifier final against South Africa showed her nerve. India needed eight from the last over with one wicket left. Harmanpreet was kept off strike, then finally got her chance. A six off the penultimate ball, followed by two scrambled runs to win it- It was classic Harmanpreet Kaur maintaining her calm when the game was at its loudest.

From defiance to dominance: The Captain Kaur era

Thanks to her character, when she became the captain, she turned that personal defiance into a team identity. India no longer arrived hoping to compete; they expected to win. Under Harmanpreet Kaur, India collected Asia Cup titles and back-to-back Asian Games gold medals. Her captaincy blended instinct with aggression, and her teams played with a visible edge. In Asia, victory stopped feeling exceptional and became the standard.

Even In the 2022 Commonwealth games she led India to the final and won the Silver as her team came agonizingly close to win the Gold and lost by just 9 runs to Australia. In September 2026, Harmanpreet became the first cricketer (male or female) to captain a team in 150 T20 internationals.

Recently another feather added to her cap as she led her team to a dominating 270-runs win in the first ever women’s Test match on the hallowed ground of Lord’s. Kranti Gaud and Yastika Bhatia put up their names in the Lord’s Honour’s board thanks to their bowling and batting heroics respectively.

Harmanpreet’s same winning mentality was carried into the Women’s Premier League, leading Mumbai Indians to the inaugural title in 2023 and a second championship in 2025. Two titles in three seasons yet again sealed her legacy as a captain- tactically sharp, composed under pressure and ready to lead from the front.

The final chapter: The World Cup

For years, India came close to an ICC trophy and left with silver. The final step remained the hardest. That wait ended at home in November 2025. Carrying the heartbeat of a nation, Harmanpreet steered India past South Africa to conquer the world. Her steady hands took the final catch sealing India’s title and cementing her legend in the stars. Harmanpreet went on to join Kapil Dev and MS Dhoni as an Indian captain to lift the 50-over World Cup.

After years of carrying the team through near-misses Harmanpreet’s journey came full circle. The leader who had carried the heaviest cross was the one who reached out, caught the final ball, and claimed eternity.

Her captaincy is over, but her influence is not. Harmanpreet led India in 155 women’s T20Is – more than any other player in the format. Across all formats, she captained India 211 times. She gave Indian women’s cricket its swagger, its steel and its biggest prize. Her legacy lives beyond the scorecard, in every young player who now walks onto the field believing Indian team belongs at the top.
