SA vs AUS: South Africa’s pace attack dominated the opening day of the first Test against Australia, leaving the visitors struggling at 187/6 at stumps at Kingsmead in Durban on Friday. Australia captain Pat Cummins elected to bat first, but his side found it difficult to build partnerships against a disciplined Proteas bowling unit. Play ended early because of bad light, with only 65.2 overs completed.
Jansen, Mulder and Nortje lead South Africa’s charge
Australia endured a difficult start as Marco Jansen dismissed Nic Maddinson for a 33-ball duck, while Wiaan Mulder removed Travis Head for nine. Marnus Labuschagne attempted to steady the innings with a composed 37 off 58 deliveries, hitting six boundaries, but Mulder trapped him leg-before-wicket to leave Australia under pressure.
Steve Smith added some resistance, scoring 25 off 53 balls, including two sixes. However, Jansen struck again, with Smith caught by Mulder, leaving the visitors struggling to establish control. Alex Carey contributed 14 before Anrich Nortje dismissed him, and the returning fast bowler subsequently removed Beau Webster for four.
Jansen, Mulder and Nortje claimed two wickets apiece, making the most of the movement on offer and keeping Australia’s scoring rate in check.
Renshaw and Cummins rescue Australia with unbeaten stand
With Australia reduced to 117/6, Matt Renshaw and Cummins provided a much-needed recovery. Renshaw remained unbeaten on 46 off 115 deliveries, striking three fours, while Cummins scored an unbeaten 33 from 72 balls, including five boundaries.
The pair added an unbroken 63-run partnership for the seventh wicket, helping Australia move towards a more respectable total after losing wickets at regular intervals. Their patient approach frustrated the South African bowlers and ensured the visitors did not suffer further damage before the close.
Jansen finished with figures of 2/35, Mulder claimed 2/31, and Nortje returned 2/40. South Africa will be pleased with their efforts, although the late partnership has given Australia some momentum heading into the second day.
The hosts will look to break the Renshaw-Cummins stand early on Day 2, while Australia will hope their lower order can add valuable runs and push the first-innings total beyond 250.
Brief scores: Australia 187/6 in 65.2 overs (Matt Renshaw 46, Pat Cummins 33, Marnus Labuschagne 37; Marco Jansen 2/35, Wiaan Mulder 2/31, Anrich Nortje 2/40). Stumps, Day 1.
