SA vs AUS: Australia seized firm control of the first Test against South Africa on Day 3 at Kingsmead, closing play with a commanding overall lead of 139 runs. After dismissing the Proteas for 284 in their first innings to secure a 106-run lead, Australia’s openers safely guided the visitors to 33/0 before bad light brought an early end to proceedings.
Aussie pace attack dismantles proteas middle order
Resuming their first innings at 27/1, South Africa struggled to build momentum against a relentless Australian bowling attack. Early promise from Aiden Markram and David Bedingham (49) was quickly snuffed out as skipper Pat Cummins spearheaded the effort. Cummins broke through with key dismissals, supported capably by Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood, and Nathan Lyon, who claimed two wickets each.
A collapsed middle order saw South Africa slip from a steady position to 197/8. However, a lower-order fightback led by spinners Simon Harmer (32*) and Keshav Maharaj (34) frustrated the Australian attack with a crucial 52-run ninth-wicket partnership, dragging the hosts to a respectable total of 284.
Walking out to bat in the third innings with a 106-run advantage, Australian openers Nic Maddinson (17) and Travis Head (10) batted aggressively to stretch the lead. Bad light halted play after 5.4 overs, leaving Australia without loss on 33/0 and in prime position to set a daunting second-innings target on Day 4.
Brief Scores: Australia 390 (Matt Renshaw 190, Pat Cummins 43; Wiaan Mulder 4/100) and 33/0 (Nic Maddinson 17*, Travis Head 10*) lead South Africa 284 (David Bedingham 49, Aiden Markram 37; Pat Cummins 3/54, Mitchell Starc 2/63) by 139 runs at stumps on Day 3.
