SA vs AUS: Matt Renshaw shines again as Australia put South Africa on brink of defeat

SA vs AUS: Matt Renshaw continued his remarkable resurgence with another crucial contribution as Australia tightened their grip on the first Test against South Africa at Kingsmead, setting the hosts a daunting target of 421 runs. South Africa reached 102/4 at stumps on Day 4, needing another 319 runs to pull off an improbable victory.

Renshaw, who had scored a magnificent 190 in Australia’s first innings, made 82 in the second innings to remain the standout performer of the match. His back-to-back contributions provided Australia with the platform to declare at 314/6 and give their bowlers sufficient time to push for victory on the final day.

Renshaw Leads Australia’s Declaration Charge

Australia resumed the day at 33 without loss and accelerated their scoring after losing early wickets. Nic Maddinson injected momentum with an entertaining 48 off 38 balls, while Marnus Labuschagne contributed 37. Steve Smith made 27 before falling to Simon Harmer.

Renshaw then took charge, combining patience with inventive strokeplay to reach 82 before Keshav Maharaj dismissed him with a caught-and-bowled effort. Beau Webster remained unbeaten on 39, while captain Pat Cummins smashed 32 not out off just 12 deliveries, including three sixes, before declaring the innings closed.

Australia’s bowlers made an immediate impact in the fourth innings. Josh Hazlewood removed one of the openers before David Bedingham counterattacked with 46. However, Hazlewood struck again to dismiss Bedingham leg-before, while Cummins sent Tristan Stubbs back for just one.

South Africa slipped to 86/4 before Aiden Markram and Wiaan Mulder steadied the innings. Markram finished unbeaten on 45, showing considerable composure against Australia’s disciplined attack, while Mulder was unbeaten on five at the close.

With 319 runs still required and six wickets remaining, South Africa face an enormous challenge on the final day. Australia, meanwhile, will look to their experienced pace attack and Nathan Lyon to finish the job and secure a commanding victory in Durban.

Brief Scores: Australia 390 & 314/6 dec (Matt Renshaw 190, 82; Nic Maddinson 48, Beau Webster 39*, Pat Cummins 32*; Anrich Nortje 2/56, Keshav Maharaj 2/56) lead South Africa 284 & 102/4 (David Bedingham 46, Aiden Markram 45*; Josh Hazlewood, Pat Cummins among the wickets) by 319 runs at stumps on Day 4.
