Sir Garfield Sobers, widely regarded as cricket’s greatest all-rounder, was laid to rest with full state honours at Kensington Oval in Bridgetown, Barbados, on July 29. Thousands gathered to bid farewell to the island’s national hero. The emotional Service of Thanksgiving celebrated not only Sobers’ extraordinary cricketing achievements but also his enduring impact on Barbados and the wider Caribbean.

The state funeral brought together some of the biggest names in world cricket. West Indies legends Brian Lara and Sir Clive Lloyd delivered heartfelt tributes, while several current West Indies players attended after their Test victory over Pakistan concluded a day early, allowing them to return home for the ceremony. Sobers’ family, including his son Daniel Sobers, were present, with Daniel holding the 90th birthday card he never had the chance to give his father. Barbadian global music icon Rihanna was also among those paying their final respects. A message from King Charles III was read by Reverend Guy Hewitt during the service.

Barbados Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley delivered a moving “Tribute of the Nation,” describing Sobers as the very soul of Barbados. “There are lives that shape a nation, and there are lives whose meaning transcends the boundaries of nation, time and place,” she said, adding that Sobers “became the standard by which greatness would forever be measured.” Concluding her address, Mottley paid a final tribute, saying, “Barbados stands for you. The West Indies stands for you. The world stands for you. For an innings that was so well played, Sir Garry, so well played. We will always love you.”

The ceremony marked the end of an era for West Indies cricket, but Sobers’ legacy as arguably the finest all-round cricketer the beautiful game has ever seen will continue to inspire the generations to come across the cricketing world.
