ICC Rankings: Indian captain Shubman Gill on Wednesday moved up three places to second in the International Cricket Council (ICC) ODI rankings for batsmen, while New Zealand fast bowler Matt Henry joined India’s Jasprit Bumrah in becoming the world’s number one bowler in Test cricket. Gill is now only 24 rating points behind New Zealand’s Daryl Mitchell.

The Indian captain’s good performance in the recently concluded three-match ODI series against Afghanistan has benefited him. He did not get a chance to bat in the final match but he scored 84 and 154 runs in the first two matches.

Ishan Kishan has moved up 21 places to 43rd in the batting rankings. Indian bowlers have also been rewarded for their good performances. Arshdeep Singh has moved up 16 places to 22nd, Prasidh Krishna has moved up 34 places to 58th, and all-rounder Washington Sundar has moved up 17 places to joint 71st.

Shubman overtakes Virat in ODI rankings

Virat Kohli missed the series against Afghanistan due to a hamstring injury, which hurt him and he slipped to third place. Rohit Sharma remains in fourth place. Shreyas Iyer moved up one spot to 14th, while KL Rahul dropped two places to 11th. With this, Shubman Gill now has a chance to regain the number one position in the rankings.

Meanwhile, Henry, who took 10 wickets in New Zealand’s 253-run win in the second Test against England, has equaled Bumrah’s points and is now jointly ranked number one. This is the first time in 36 years that a New Zealand fast bowler has reached the top spot, following Jack Cowie and Richard Hadlee. England’s stand-in captain Joe Root has regained the top spot in the Test batsmen’s rankings.
