AUS vs BAN: Australia, having lost the first Test against Bangladesh in Darwin, has announced its 13-member squad for the second Test starting on August 22 in South Mackay. Opening batsman Jake Weatherald, who failed to impress in the first Test, has been dropped from the squad.

Weatherald had struggled in the first Test, scoring 23 and 0 runs across the two innings. He is the only player being replaced in the Australian squad; Matt Renshaw has been brought in to take his place. Renshaw could open the innings alongside Travis Head. In 24 innings across 14 Test matches, Renshaw has scored 645 runs, including one century and three half-centuries, with a highest score of 184.

Jack Weatherald dropped from the squad

Renshaw will be Australia’s seventh opener since David Warner’s retirement in early 2024; Travis Head, Steve Smith, Nathan McSweeney, Sam Konstas, Marnus Labuschagne, and subsequently Weatherald have all been tried in the role.

Marnus Labuschagne has managed to retain his spot, but he faces pressure after a poor showing in the first Test, where he scored only 1 and 31 runs. If he makes the playing XI, the pressure to score will be immense; another failure could see him dropped from the team.

Australia lost the previous Test (AUS vs BAN) due to poor batting. In the second Test against Bangladesh, the bowlers, alongside the batters, will need to improve their performance. If Australia fails to win the second Test (AUS vs BAN), they risk losing a Test series to Bangladesh for the first time.
