Robinson and Tongue scalped 5 wickets each
Robinson and Tongue shared the honours with outstanding five-wicket hauls. Robinson finished with five for 51 from 18 overs, while Tongue claimed five for 46 from 9.1 overs. Their relentless pace and movement ensured Pakistan could not build on its promising recovery.
England’s reply began positively but suffered two quick setbacks. Ben Duckett made 15 before Mohammad Abbas removed him, while debutant Emilio Gay scored 33 before falling to Mohammad Ali. Jordan Cox then joined Root and the pair produced a crucial unbeaten 63-run stand. Root was 37 not out, while Cox remained unbeaten on 23.
Rain caused interruptions during the day, but England nevertheless finished in a commanding position. With eight wickets in hand and only 59 runs separating them from Pakistan’s modest total, the hosts will look to establish a sizeable first-innings (ENG vs PAK) lead on day two.
