Bangladesh stunned everyone by defeating Australia in their own backyard. In the first Test played in Darwin, Bangladesh registered a historic nine-wicket victory. This victory against Australia has propelled Bangladesh to fourth place in the World Test Championship (WTC) 2025-27 points table. However, Bangladesh’s victory directly affect Team India and has taken a shape of a major resistive drag for Shubman Gill’s side in the race for the WTC final.
India are fifth in the WTC points table
Currently, Australia holds the top spot in the WTC 2025-27 points table with 77.78 percent points. Defending champions South Africa are second with 75 percent, New Zealand third with 72.22 percent, and Bangladesh fourth with 66.67 percent. Meanwhile, India is fifth with 48.15 percent points. There is a difference of approximately 18 percent points between India and Bangladesh.
Now, if Bangladesh had lost the first Test against Australia, their win percentage would have dropped to 46.67. In such a scenario, Team India would have risen to fourth place. On the other side, the defeat in Darwin has reduced Australia’s points percentage from 87.50 to 77.78, although they remain at the top of the WTC table. Bangladesh’s historic victory has kept India at fifth place, and now they need to put extra bit of effort to gain someting positive in this WTC final race.

Given the current situation, even a single defeat or draw could further exacerbate India’s difficulties. This means that all upcoming Tests are a do-or-die situation for Team India.
